The Embroidered Altarpiece from El Burgo de Osma

The retable of Pedro de Montoya, bishop of Osma (1453–1474), is the largest example of an embroidered altarpiece. Today, it is part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The altarpiece underwent conservation / restoration and technical documentation in the Abegg-Stiftung. This was followed by an international workshop focusing on the concept and technique of the altarpiece as well as on its art historical and historical context. The essays locate this masterpiece of an ambitious donor in the artistic milieu of fifteenth-century Castile. Contributions on the art of embroidery in the Crown of Aragon complete the volume.

Velvets of the Fifteenth Century

Velvets were an outstanding testimonial to social rank and status among the ruling classes of the fifteenth century. They were much sought after for their ability to confer a sense of authority and wealth on those who wore or used them.
The prominent position occupied by velvet in fifteenth-century silk weaving formed the focal point of an international colloquium at the Abegg-Stiftung in 2015. The proceedings published here explore a wide array of themes, ranging from developments in style through innovations in technique to the various economic requirements and implications of velvet production.

Animals in Text and Textile. Storytelling in the Medieval World

Luxury textiles worn by the elites of medieval society often show animals. Their role is not merely decorative, rather they point to specific contents, for instance the privilege of hunting or the concept of courtly love. By incorporating literary texts this volume reveals the cultural-historical dimension of depictions of animals in courtly life. The here assembled papers were presented during a colloquium at the Abegg-Stiftung in 2016. The contributions explore the importance of animals in texts, textiles, and the pictorial arts.

Iconography of Liturgical Textiles in the Middle Ages

Whereas aspects of iconography have been reflected in monographic studies on individual pieces, the broader functional context of liturgical textiles and their iconography have so far barely been considered in scholarly publications. The book, presenting the papers delivered during a colloquium in 2007 at the Abegg-Stiftung, provides insights into this topic from various viewpoints.
